MCA sonar survey finds 2 U-boats

Two First World War German U-boats have been found on the sea-bed off Orkney by a Maritime & Coastguard Agency survey vessel.

One of them, U102, was commanded by Kurt Beitzenn who, in an earlier sub, U75, laid mines off Orkney one of which sunk HMS Hampshire, the cruiser aboard which Lord Kitchener, the Secretary of War, was travelling on a diplomatic mission to Russia.

The boats are 200 feet down and just two miles apart.
