Too late for Cape Horn

Sailing schoolboy Mike Perham, 17, who is hoping to become the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world, has ruled out rounding Cape Horn. Shortly after clocking his 20,000th mile this week, as well as hitting his 100th day at sea, he decided against ‘pushing too hard’ in a Southern Ocean winter.

‘I would love to round Cape Horn, but going through Panama makes no difference to the record,’ he said.

The trip was originally envisaged to cover 24,000 miles. However, with all the deviations to stop for repairs and to avoid bad weather, the trip is expected to cover around 30,000 miles. Mike is expected home in late July.
