Two crewmen acted swiftly when the Dartmouth Kingswear ferry in Devon was wrenched off its cables in a storm and blown towards the open sea with 34 passengers aboard.

The crew managed to get a line on a mooring buoy as they passed.

Then a second ferry and the lifeboat took off the passengers insleet and driving rain.
