Ferry blown onto chalk rocks off Newhaven

Seventeen passengers watched anxiously as their ferry was blown onto the chalk boulder-lined shore at the entrance to Newhaven, in East Sussex.

A south-westerly Force 9 blew the ship off course as it lined up for the harbour entrance.

Two harbour tugs are hoping to refloat the ferry, Sardinia Vira, which is also carrying 55 crew and eight articulated trucks.
