Father unable to complete UK circumnavigation because of illness

A solo yachtsman plans to circumnavigate the British Isles and fulfil his father’s lifelong ambition that illness has left him unable to complete.

Adrian Scott will leave Emsworth on April 23 on his Beneteau 321, African Breeze, and will round the UK and Ireland in a clockwise direction.

His father, who taught him to sail aged six, has suffered from multiple sclerosis for over 30 years and dreamed of sailing this voyage, but his condition has made that unachievable.

But Adrian will do the voyage on his father’s behalf and record all aspects of it so his father ‘is able to live some of his ambition vicariously through me’.

He will also raise money for multiple sclerosis and intends to complete the voyage with as few stops as possible and as quickly as he can.

He said: ‘I intend to consider the impact that such a solo voyage has on my emotional state and the way hopefully I grow in my own understanding of sailing skills and strength of character throughout.

‘In doing so as well as providing a record for my father I hope I can create an inspirational journal which displays how such a voyage could be attainable to many UK sailors and also the sheer beauty that this coastline will reward to all.’
