Glyn Charles Memorial Pursuit Race promises close racing and good fun
Glyn Charles was one of Great Britain’s best young sailors, tragically lost in the 1998 Sydney Hobart race. Each year, friends and acquaintances invite dinghy and small keelboat sailors from around the country to compete in the Glyn Charles Memorial Pursuit Race, held in Chichester Harbour and run by Hayling Island Sailing Club (HISC).
The race has never been dominated by any one class: past winners include Osprey, Ultra 30, Laser 5000, and Wayfarer, and there were six different classes in last year’s top eight including 3 keelboats!
This year’s race will be held on 17 June 2006. It’s an afternoon tide, so racing for the slowest classes is not expected to start before 1pm. All visitors are welcome, and though we may be surprised to observe the traditional summer evening migration of penguins (it’s the club summer ball the same evening!) there will be less formal food available for sailors in the early evening, and the bar will of course be open to all.
All proceeds from the race will go to Glyn’s favourite charity, the John Merricks Trust.
