Isle of Skye to be renamed in Old Gaelic

The Highland Council’s announcement the Isle of Skye will be known by its old Gaelic title – Eilean a’Cheo, translated as the misty isle, has met with mixed views with Skye residents.

Those not in favour of the return to the Western Isle’s historical roots should perhaps think themselves lucky; Eilean a’ Cheo is a more ‘modern’ version of the island’s even less pronounceable original name, An t-Eilean Sgitheanach. Try sayingthatbackwards!
