Yachting Monthly reader David Trossell, 51, from Lymington, has won the Yachting Monthly Family Trophy in this year’s Round the Island Race for the fastest family crewed boat in the ISC Division.

Managing Director David sailed his bilge-keeled Hunter Horizon 23Holdinawith his two sons William, 22, a trainee architect, and George, 17, a student.

The family have sailed together for the past 10 years; their first boat was an Express Pilot, and they upgraded toHoldinain 2003. David is mainly a weekend sailor, and likes nothing more than pottering around the Solent.

The family have done several Round the Islands, but this is their first prize in the race – they were some of the many casualties who didn’t make it all the way round last year due to light winds and foul tide. This year, however, they had a great race, said David. ‘ We were surprised at how well we were doing – we were pointing just as high as loads of fin keels and passing some!’Holdinafinished the race at 16.43hrs, giving her an elapsed time of 10.03hrs and a corrected time of 7.56hrs.

They were so tired when they returned to Cowes that they didn’t check the results, so the news that they had won the Trophy came as a surprise to David: ‘we didn’t know anything about it until Monday. We thought we’d done quite well, but not that well!’
