Dunkirk Little Ships and classic steam tug Challenge on display

London-based sailors may be interested in a festival of classic boats at St Katharine Docks running until Sunday 15 September.

The St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival features nine Dunkirk Little Ships dating from the 1920s and 1930s. They will be on display over coming weekend.

Among the Little Ships will be the steam tug Challenge, recently refurbished thanks to a Heritage lottery fund grant.

Challenge was the last steam tug to work on the Thames and 2013 marks the 40th anniversary since she left service.

The nine participating Dunkirk Little Ships include Challenge, Chumley, Elvin, Endeavour LO41, Janthea, MTB 102, Nyula, Riis 1 and Wanda.

The Dunkirk Little Ships supported ‘Operation Dynamo’ in evacuating British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940.

There will be a host of other stands and events at the festival.
