Yachting Monthly, Hyde Sails and Southern Sailing simulator

Yachting Monthly, Hyde Sails and a team of instructors from Southern Sailing are putting on a spinnaker flying demonstration at the London Boat Show.

The show runs from January 6-15 at ExCeL in London’s Docklands.

The demonstration, running at regular intervals every day throughout the show, follows a popular exhibition at last year’s show of how to use a cruising chute.

This time, as well as running a repeat of the cruising chute demo, Yachting Monthly writer and renowned cruising instructor John Goode and a team from Southampton-based school Southern Sailing will show how to confidently hoist, trim, gybe and drop a spinnaker in easy-to-follow stages.

They will be using a simulator, resembling the rig and deck of a typical cruising yacht, with huge fans generating wind to fill the sails.

The simulator will also be used by Sunsail to demonstrate more advanced spinnaker techniques for racing sailors looking to get closer to the front of the fleet.

While the fans are off, there will be clinics on packing a spinnaker, rigging a furling chute and more top racing tips from experts.
