Yachtsmen continue to enjoy cigarettes after July 1

From 1st of July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smokefree. But how will it affect the cabins of charter yachts?

The Marine Leisure Association has discussed the issue with the Department for Transport, and discovered that sea-going and inland waterway vessels covered by the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 will be dealt with separately.

On July 1st there will be no legal obligation to ensure vessels are smokefree and down to individual company discretion. The Department for Transport will commence a consultation process within 2-3 months on how the smoking ban will be implemented onboard a vessel. Once consultation begins, the relevant papers will be available on the DFT website. The MLA is on the consultation list and Members will be kept informed as events unfold.
