Jury to consider charge of manslaughter

A jury in the trial of a ferry officer accused of the manslaughter of three crew who drowned when their yacht sank has retired to consider its verdict.
Michael Hubble, 62, is accused of ‘turning a blind eye’ and failing to stop the P&O ferry Pride of Bilbao after a close encounter with a yacht.

James Meaby, Rupert Saunders, both 36, and Jason Downer, 35, all drowned when Ouzo was lost off the Isle of Wight last year. Hubble, of Folkestone, Kent, the officer of the watch of the ferry, denies the charges.

Prosecutors claim the 37,500-tonne ferry narrowly missed and swamped or collided with Ouzo, which was on its way from Bembridge to a regatta in Dartmouth in the early hours of 21 August 2006.
