Yachtsman John Lancaster-Smith has died at the age of 83. The former Merchant Navy officer became a well known travel agent promoting sea voyages as the best means of travel.

John was a member of the Royal Cruising Club and spent his retirement sailing his gaff cutter Marlin to the Med and also the Baltic.

His wife Jean died in 1984. He is survived by a son and four daughters
