California stopover for Clipper Race

Q. What have Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Arnold Schwarzenegger got in common?
A. They both pump iron.

But while the 68-year-old circumnavigator’s biceps are finely tuned from turning a winch handle, the 61-year-old actor’s musculature comes from lifting weights. The Austrian-born beefcake also admits to having used performance-enhancing anabolic steroids in the past to keep his muscles bulging once he’d built them up. Whereas Knox-Johnston keeps his own body in shape by chopping logs for firewood at his Hampshire home.

Soon the pair will be able to exchange notes on personal fitness because as California’s State Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger is supporting America’s first west coast entry in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race.

The race organisers Clipper Ventures will field a yacht called California in the next edition of the biennial event and host a stopover in the state when the fleet races in from China in April 2010. California will compete against nine other internationally sponsored ocean racing yachts in a 35,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe.
