Auction of world famed images

A world-famous archive of wreck images is up for auction at Sotheby’s and could fetch more than £150,000.

The images of 200 ships were taken by four generations of the Isles of Scilly-based Gibson family over 130 years. It consists of a thousand negatives recording the fate of their passengers, crew and cargo as they traveled around the world.

It all started when John Gibson bought his first camera 150 years ago and set up a professional studio in Penzance.

The family featured in Yachting Monthly’s Cruising Grounds series in October.
