The Velux 5 Oceans yachts approach Finisterre

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was trailing the fleet this morning in the Velux 5 Oceans, round-the-world solo race. He was in sixth place in Saga, his Open 60.

In the fight for first place overnight Bernard Stamm, skipper of Cheminee Poujoulat has extended his lead over Mike Golding’s Ecover and Alex Thomson on Hugo Boss. The Swiss skipper is now just over 10 miles ahead of Golding and 21.5 miles ahead of Thomson, the boat fetching their way west along the north coast of Spain, the wind now in the southwest.

At the 0500GMT position update Stamm still had 139.5 miles to go to reach Cape Finisterre before he can round the corner. The wind, currently around 20 knots and gusty, is expected to build to 30 knots over the course of this morning.

The race makes two stops – one in Fremantle, Western Australia, the other in Norfolk, Viriginia, in the US before finishing at Bilbao
