New scheme lets boaters improve chart accuracy

TeamSurv, a new EU-backed scheme, is asking YM readers to submit data from their GPS and sounder, recorded automatically while sailing, in a bid to prove that the accuracy of the new EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) GPS enhancement paves the way for low-cost, community-sourced survey information.

After your passage, you upload the data to TeamSurv’s server, the it is processed with algorithms to account for barometric pressure and tidal heights, to create cheap, accurate chart survey data. Tim Thornton, YM’s electronics correspondent, is TeamSurv’s technology team leader.
