HMS York alongside at St Helier

A Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer has for the first time moored up alongside in St Helier, Jersey. The historic berthing of HMS York marked the opening of the second Jersey Boat Show.

Some 15,000 visitors are expected to attend the show this bank holiday weekend. More than 80 boats are on display in and around the harbour, including yachts from Southerly, Dufour, Beneteau, Legend and Fingulf.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship Lord Nelson is moored at the Albert Pier in St Helier. Both the Lord Nelson and HMS York are open to the public. More than 1,000 people visited HMS York on the opening day, Saturday.

Speaking to Yachting Monthly, Commander Andy Price, the commanding officer of HMS York, said that while he has experience of sailing yachts, he much prefers a vessel with ‘four gas turbines and a big gun.’
