Bicentennial of slave-trade abolition

‘The Sea is History’, said poet Derek Walcott, and a new project is continuing the theme. 2007 is the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade, and to commemorate it, the Same Boat project plans to retrace the sea route of the Atlantic Slave Triangle.

The boat that will be used is a 37ft Kelsall trimaran fittingly calledRedemption’s Song. She will carry a cargo of symbolic rites and images gathered en route. A series of workshops and performances will take place before the boat heads off for west Africa in early 2008.
