Friendly race a great success

Gipsy Moth IV was first over the finish lines for the two races held today, Wednesday. In bright sunshine and with a Force 3-4 filling her sails she romped home ahead of Suhaili and Lively Lady.

With her slim hull, new sails from Crusader and long waterline she was also going to be the boat to beat, though a specially devised handicapping system will correct times and may see a change in results.

‘It’s been a privilege to be on the water today,’ said Yachting Monthly editor Paul Gelder.

‘This was never about who came first – it is simply a celebration of some of the most important yachts to have ever set sail from Britain’s shore.’

‘The fact that they are still sailing is fantastic – this is where they need to be, on the water.’

After the second race the yachts were returning to the UKSA in Cowes for a presentation.
