St Paul's as cash cow

Tomb raiders

Over the festive break I decided to expose my 11-year-old son to the true meaning of Christmas by luring him to St Paul's Cathedral with a promise of a visit to the tomb of Lord Nelson.

But just inside the Nave was a busy check-in with credit card swipes and a charge of £12.50 just for me. 'Dad, that's a rip-off,' said the boy and I agreed.

So instead we took the bus to the free Natural History Museum and I was left describing Nelson's resting place to my son from a 1970s visit I made when entry to God's house was not a money-making exercise.
