Lap of lunacy

Elephant in the room

Kodiak bears atop the chilly heights of Alaska's Glacier Bay might give the 116,000 ton luxury cruise ship, Diamond Princess, a passing glance as she steams into their world. Humpback whales might fin down a bit deeper as her giant props throb into their seas.

On board will be 2,670 passengers and 1,110 crew eating burgers at the 'poolside pizzeria', playing golf on the nine hole course, playing poker in the 'Grand casino' or maybe just having a good old whirlpool spa, whatever that might be.

The brochures I have been sent from Princess Cruises reveal the passengers can fly in from all over the world and will be paying up to £5,600 each to view this disappearing world. How much their cruise is contributing to Glacier Bay's rarity value is another matter.
